A fever is a vital immune response.
In a medical study, they say, fever is a cardinal response to infection that has been conserved in warm and cold-blooded vertebrates for over 600 million years of evolution. The fever response is executed by integrated physiological and neuronal circuitry and confers a survival benefit during infection.
Keep in mind that a fever is different for each person. A lethargic child with a 101 fever is more concerning than an alert child with 101 fever.
So what herbs can we use when we have a fever?
If we want to support a fever, we can use stimulating diaphoretics. These will help the fever to be more productive. It can also help the fever to be more bearable by causing your body to sweat.
Examples: Tulsi, Sage, Yarrow, Ginger
If we want to break a high fever, we can use relaxing diaphoretics. These will release the tension and release heat without supporting the fever.
Examples: peppermint, catnip, linden, lemon balm, skullcap.
If you can't decide what is best, mix both for a balanced blend.
Wishing you health and happiness, Rebekah
